Recent examples highlight this connection, such as Russian cyberattacks targeting Italian foreign ministry offices and Olympic venues just before the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics in February 2026. In May 2026, Austria reported cyberattack attempts against Eurovision infrastructure amidst political tensions. Pro-Russian groups launched attacks against Austrian government and financial institutions in September 2024, coinciding with national elections. Similarly, during the Iran war in March 2026, groups claimed to possess sensitive data from Lockheed Martin. The observatory tracks these events to reveal patterns, such as defense-sector leaks surfacing during periods of high political tension surrounding military cooperation, demonstrating that the digital domain is intrinsically linked to global affairs.
